Healthy Eating

I think that we should discuss what whole grain means. Most of us when we see something says whole wheat we think that it is the wisest choice to make. It is not! Whole grain is better! A whole grain is a cereal grain with an intact kernel. This consists of the bran, germ and endosperm, which is the core of the kernel. Fiber is found in whole grains. Fiber is so important. It helps with food absorption and it lowers cholesterol. A diet rich in whole grains can reduce your risk for heart disease and cancer. When you eat more whole grains you feel fuller for a longer amount of time therefore you will eat less. Whole grains also contain B vitamins and many minerals. Foods that contain whole grains are oatmeal, whole grain bread, 100 percent whole grain pasta, brown rice, and whole grain cereal. Whole grain is better than whole wheat. Whole wheat does contain fiber but it is not as good as whole grain.Ingredients to look for:
  • brown rice
  • bulgur
  • graham flour
  • whole grain corn
  • whole oats
  • whole wheat
  • wild rice

Just because something says it contains bran, seven grain or multi-grain does not mean that they are necessarily whole grain foods. Ladies....please post recipes that include whole grain foods!!!! Thanks......Elyse Rose

  2. Thank you for your comment. You may be onto something! I really did not know anything about spelt but am learning that it is an ancient grain that is a cousin to wheat and is extremely nutritious! It seems to have many, many health benefits. So this grain seems to be extremely important! Thank you for bringing it to my attention. How does it taste in comparison to whole grain/whole wheat bread?
