October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month

October = Breast Cancer Awareness.
Breast Cancer is the most common cancer besides skin cancer among women. Every 3 seconds someone is diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I was one of them. But I was one of the lucky ones. Mine was non-invasive (stage 0). "Stage 0 is carcinoma in situ, early stage cancer that is confined to the ducts or the lobules, depending on where it started. It has not gone into the tissues in the breast nor spread to other organs in the body.

Ductal carcinoma in situ (DCIS): This is the most common type of noninvasive breast cancer, when abnormal cells are in the lining of a duct. DCIS is also called intraductal carcinoma. DCIS sometimes becomes invasive cancer if not treated."
I had a lumpectomy followed by six weeks of radiation therapy. After that I took Tamoxifen for five years. I wasn't very good at taking the Tamoxifen. Whenever I didn't feel good I blamed it on the Tamoxifen. That was kind of stupid. Well that was 10 years ago.
There is talk that the guidelines for mammograms is changing to get a baseline mammography starting at 50 years old. Well if that was the case back 11 years ago then I would not be here because my breast cancer was diagnosed when I was 45.
So ladies please keep up with your mammograms and sonograms. Early detection is so important! I have to yell at myself because I am overdue for a Breast MRI. I am going to get one right after my mammogram and sonogram which is this month.
There are so many ways that we can give to such a charitable cause. Here are just a few......

Check out "The Oprah Magazine" for October......So many great buys to support a great cause!!!!

Ladies, please visit my 2011 post for Breast cancer awareness here.

  1. Hi Elyse, I am interested in discussing the information I have been reading (mostly from the Hufffington Post}about breast cancer. The National Breast Cancer Coaliton (NBCC) has published an article each day of October in conjunction with Oct being breast cancer awareness month. I posted this link to FB but I don't think anyone noticed it:'Ann Schneider Mindicino
It's breast cancer awareness month & I know most of you probably go for your annual mammograms as I just did. However read the articles from breast cancer coalition; sign their petition. The information is discouraging but we should be aware!

Truth #19: Breast Cancer Deadline 2020
    www.breastcancerdeadline2020.org
NBCC Countdown to 2020'" (end FB post.) Elyse...
Watch the NBCC videos; look at some of the articles. It is very disconcerting; basically alleges that we have not made any significant progress in solving breast cancer since the 1970s. No harm in signing their petition demanding the govt set a deadline to end breast cancer by 2020. This is their petition & link:"Copy the text below into an email to your friends and ask them to urge the President to make a public commitment to Breast Cancer Deadline 2020®.

Subject: End Breast Cancer by January 1, 2020

    Hey [Name],

Nearly 40,000 women in the U.S. will die this year from breast cancer. More than 288,000 women and 2,100 men will be diagnosed with the disease in 2011. This is unacceptable.

Can you join me in asking President Obama to make Breast Cancer Deadline 2020®—the end of breast cancer by January 1, 2020—a national priority? Sign the petition today.

If you want to do more to help us reach our goal, there are other ways you can take action. To start, visit our website regularly at BreastCancerDeadline2020.org and stay informed." (quoting from NBCC site)

I wrote a long comment about an important blog that you posted but as you say Elyse, "We have so much to talk about" ann
