My Colonoscopy

Well, after canceling four appointments in the past year I finally did not bail and went ahead with my colonoscopy. It is not like I haven't had one before. I have had four or five ( I can't even remember how many). I started getting colonoscopies when I turned 40. My uncle died from colon cancer at 46. He was never screened for it. I have had polyps removed multiple times. The polyps are removed during the colonoscopy. You do not feel a thing.
I stressed so much over this procedure because of the prep. It is not the most pleasant thing to do but it is a life saving procedure and it is so wonderful that it is available to us. It is a good thing that I did go because I did have another polyp which was removed during the procedure. After the procedure was over my doctor showed me a picture of what the polyp looked like before he removed it. Amazing!
Since I did have a polyp I have to have a colonoscopy again in three years. Usually it is every five years.

Please Ladies........schedule your colonoscopy if you have never had one or if you are overdue.
I'm not going to stress next time. It is not a big deal.

Next test......mammo/sono!

Soy Foods

Soyfoods.......including edamame, tofu and soymilk can help to keep skin firm. These foods are rich in Isoflavones. Isoflavones help prevent collagen breakdown. They also act as antioxidants----attacking free radicals caused by sun exposure.

Coffee

Drinking coffee (not decaf) may lower your risk of developing skin cancer (non melanoma). Actually the more caffeinated coffee you drink a day the lower your risk. Obviously the ingredient that we are talking about is caffeine. Both in coffee and tea. Caffeine kills precancerous and ultraviolet-damaged skin cells by blocking a protein that they need to divide and multiply.

Ladies, not a reason to start drinking coffee but if you do what great news!

Germ Free

Ladies........

Tip of the Day.....I heard this on "The Doctors" this morning.

If you want your hands to be germ-free wash them for 20 seconds.

Good point since flu season will be here before we know it.

Healthy Eating

Salmon will help keep our skin beautiful!

Salmon contains Omega-3 fatty acids,DHA and EPA, which are also found in other fatty fish such as tuna and sardines. Omega-3 fatty acids will protect your skin from UV damage which in turn will protect your skin from skin cancer. Eating fatty fish will also keep your skin looking young. EPA preserves Collagen. Omega-3s are also heart healthy.

Tip: Eat two servings of fatty fish each week.

Healthy Eating

I think that we should discuss what whole grain means. Most of us when we see something says whole wheat we think that it is the wisest choice to make. It is not! Whole grain is better! A whole grain is a cereal grain with an intact kernel. This consists of the bran, germ and endosperm, which is the core of the kernel. Fiber is found in whole grains. Fiber is so important. It helps with food absorption and it lowers cholesterol. A diet rich in whole grains can reduce your risk for heart disease and cancer. When you eat more whole grains you feel fuller for a longer amount of time therefore you will eat less. Whole grains also contain B vitamins and many minerals. Foods that contain whole grains are oatmeal, whole grain bread, 100 percent whole grain pasta, brown rice, and whole grain cereal. Whole grain is better than whole wheat. Whole wheat does contain fiber but it is not as good as whole grain.Ingredients to look for:
  • brown rice
  • bulgur
  • graham flour
  • whole grain corn
  • whole oats
  • whole wheat
  • wild rice

Just because something says it contains bran, seven grain or multi-grain does not mean that they are necessarily whole grain foods. Ladies....please post recipes that include whole grain foods!!!! Thanks......Elyse Rose
