Super Foods

Just eight strawberries contain more vitamin C than one orange!  A cup of strawberries also provides manganese, fiber, iodine, potassium, folate, vitamin B2, vitamin B5, omega-3 fatty acids, vitamin B6, vitamin K, magnesium and copper.   Few berries can compete with the strawberry for fighting a vast array of diseases, including fighting inflammation, controlling diabetes, to protecting cognitive function and improving heart health.  Yes, strawberries are that powerful!  The high phenolic content decreases activity of the COX enzyme (cyclooxygenase) to offer protection against inflammation-related diseases like rheumatoid arthritis and osteoarthritis.  Studies have shown that even in freeze-dried form, strawberries offer protection against a wide range of cancers, including breast and colon cancer.  Research has also found that regular strawberry intake could support folate status and heart health.

Who Are You Calling Grandma?

LAST month, Gwyneth Paltrow, promoting her new cookbook, “My Father’s Daughter” (Grand Central Life & Style), on the television show “Chelsea Lately,” revealed that her mother, the actress Blythe Danner, wanted to be called Woof by her grandchildren, Apple and Moses. “My mom’s hot and she didn’t want to be called Grandma,” Ms. Paltrow said. “So she kept trying to make the Woof thing stick. It’s even her e-mail address.”

Apple, in Gwyneth Paltrow's arms in 2007, came up with the name Lalo for her grandmother, Blythe Danner, right, Ms. Danner said.

Goldie Hawn, who was named Glam-Ma.
Ms. Paltrow did not elaborate on the provenance of Woof, nor on her children’s actual nickname for Ms. Danner, Lalo. But another Hollywood grandmother, the actress Goldie Hawn, has written about her own reluctance to embrace the term in her best-selling memoir, “A Lotus Grows in the Mud” (Berkley Trade): “The wonderful day arrived; my grandson, Ryder Russell, burst forth into this world. I could barely contain myself. But was I really a ‘grandmother’?” Ms. Hawn wrote. (Or, as Shirley MacLaine howled in the 1983 movie “Terms of Endearment,” “Why should I be happy about being a grandmother?”)
It is, Ms. Hawn continued, a “word that had so many connotations of old age and decrepitude.”
“My son Oliver decided I should be called ‘Glam-Ma,’ which I thought was quite brilliant and made us all laugh so hard.”
The term has stuck. According to UrbanDictionary.com, “If 60 is the new 40 then GlamMa is the new Grandma, a woman with a sense of self and style.”

(This article was taken from "More" magazine.)

How great is GlamMa.  I love it!  I am not yet a grandparent but it is something that I look forward to.  It is one of the many great perks of being a "Boomer."  We get to be grandparents...but we are the boomers, so remember we are forever young.  So we might not like the traditional title of grandma.  Today we are naming ourselves.  Anything goes.  Be creative.  In today's world there are often more than two sets of grandparents!  I, for one, will be one of four grandmothers for my step-daughter's future child!  Being creative will really be important for our family.
What do your grandchildren call you?
Grandparents.com has named Sally Field "Grandparent of the Week."  Gidget is now a 64 year old grandparent of three!!!  Click here for story.

Don't Overdo The Perfume!

By Wendy Joy

When we get out of the shower or bath we smell good. Fresh as the morning air!  We used some soap and water and we smell like ourselves and I bet if we walked by anyone in the street they would think "clean, fresh scent." But OH NO, we have to screw it up by drowning ourselves in what we think is an amazing fragrance.   We smell pretty good and yet we find it completely necessary to drench and soak ourselves in perfume!

We enter a room and the first thing we do is overwhelm people with our scent.   They have to hold their nose just so they don't faint from the fumes.  I know we may think that our scents smell delicious and I'm sure some of them do (at least to us)....but it is very personal and to overdo it is nothing more than offensive.  You are wearing the fragrance. You should not be wearing the bottle!

Everyone that you come in contact with  does not have to go away with a reminder of you for the rest of the day.  No one ever thought "Oh I wish that lady had more perfume on because it smells so good!"  Why do we have to give off noxious fumes when we walk into a room and make people feel queasy because we just doused ourselves in a heavy scent that smells like one kind of flower or another.

Then the dreaded hug that transfers all of our perfume onto the unsuspecting person who then has to spend the rest of the day in your scent whether they like it or not.  That's right!  When you put on too much perfume you transfer it to everyone you come into contact with and they know it right away.  "Damn, now I am going to smell like Lilac all day long and I have a very important business meeting to attend."  When someone meets you,  your scent should be soft because you smell beautiful from your bath or shower.  And if you don't smell beautiful and you are trying to cover up a bad smell like BO  after a workout, then that's even worse. The combination of body odor and perfume is lethal!  And men are guilty of this too. They are some of the worst offenders but I'm writing this for us, not for them...but at some point we are going to have to be honest with them as well.  When a man walks into the room with too much cologne on it's a turnoff....admit it. I have been asphyxiated by men's cologne!  Well, same goes for us.  The next time we feel compelled to spritz six more times, let's make it two and everyone will walk away remembering our beautiful smile, not "Exotic Daisy."

FYI..... Some men hate perfume.....It is a turnoff to them.....Keep that in mind!!!!!!!

Comments made in the year 1955!

Hi Ladies,
I was one year old in 1955!  I cannot believe these comments that were made.  Let's time travel back!
Hope you enjoy this.  It was sent to me in an e-mail.  I don't know who wrote it so I can't give credit.  Sorry about that but had to post......such a simpler time!

I’ll tell you one thing, if things
keep going the way they are,
it’s going to be impossible to
buy a week’s groceries for $10.00.

Have you seen the new cars
coming out next year? It won’t
be long before $2,000.00 will
only buy a used one.

If cigarettes keep going up in
price, I’m going to quit; 20 cents
a pack is ridiculous.

Did you hear the post office is
thinking about charging 7 cents
just to mail a letter.

If they raise the minimum wage
to $1.00, nobody will be able to
hire outside help at the store.

When I first started driving, who
would have thought gas would
someday cost 25 cents a gallon.
Guess we’d be better off leaving
the car in the garage.

I’m afraid to send my kids to the
movies any more. Ever since they
let Clark Gable get by with saying
DAMN in GONE WITH THE WIND,
it seems every new movie has
either HELL or DAMN in it.

I read the other day where some
scientist thinks it’s possible to put
a man on the moon by the end of
the century. They even have some
fellows they call astronauts
preparing for it down in Texas .

Did you see where some baseball
player just signed a contract for
$50,000 a year just to play ball?
It wouldn’t surprise me if someday
they’ll be making more than the
President.

I never thought I’d see the day
all our kitchen appliances would
be electric. They're even making
electric typewriters now.

It’s too bad things are so tough
nowadays. I see where a few
married women are having to
work to make ends meet.

It won’t be long before young
couples are going to have to hire
someone to watch their kids so
they can both work.

I’m afraid the Volkswagen car
is going to open the door to a
whole lot of foreign business.

Thank goodness I won’t live to
see the day when the Government
takes half our income in taxes. I
sometimes wonder if we are
electing the best people to
government.

The fast food restaurant is
convenient for a quick meal,
but I seriously doubt they
will ever catch on.

There is no sense going on short
trips anymore for a weekend. It
costs nearly $2.00 a night to stay
in a hotel.

No one can afford to be sick
anymore. At $15.00 a day in
the hospital, it’s too rich for
my blood.

If they think I’ll pay 30 cents
for a haircut, forget it.

Kirstie Alley

Just another fabulous woman over fifty!  Does she have energy or what?  I could never do what she is doing.  And it is so wonderful how great she looks.  As we all know she has struggled with her weight for so long.  She loses, she gains but she always has a pretty face!  Well now she is getting a body to match.  And not only that.  Looking good is important but Kirstie will feel and be so much healthier being slimmer.  And of course we know that all the dancing in the world won't slim you down unless you improve what you are eating.  And she is doing that as well!  I admire Kirstie because we all know how difficult it is to lose weight and keep it off.  Girls, we have to network with each other.  We have to give each other encouragement.  If we are there for each other than losing weight might be that much easier.  We have to be each others coaches.  Call a friend and go for a walk!  We can do that!

Top Three Diet Plans

Hi Girls/Ladies, (verdict is still out)
Consumer tests were conducted and the results for the top three diet plans are:

  1. Jenny Craig
  2. Slim Fast
  3. Weight Watchers
Actually I am very surprised.  I would think that Weight Watchers would be number 1.  I think that Weight Watchers is the most realistic of all the diet plans.  I really don't like to use the word diet because I feel that it is a stressful word.  Diet plan maybe sounds a little better.  What about just eating sensibly?  What is sensible eating in regard to losing weight and being healthy?  Well, if you go by math alone then I think more calories have to be going out then coming in!  With that being said I believe that the calories coming in have to be healthy calories.  That means trying not to eat fried foods, too much sugar (which I am guilty of), too much cheese,  too many carbs, too many fatty foods!
I believe that we know the best foods to eat but we just get lazy and it is much easier to eat what is unhealthy and what we think tastes better to us.  The truth is if we started eating healthier we would start to enjoy eating that way because we would see results and just know that we are putting healthier foods into our bodies, which we deserve to do.  We need to be kinder to ourselves!
Portion control is extremely important.  That is what Weight Watchers advocates.  What is so great about Weight Watchers is that you can buy your own food.  WW also gives you delicious recipes.  Jenny Craig's food are pre-packaged frozen foods that contain a lot of sodium which may not be a good thing for you.  The meals, I'm told, do not taste great and are costly.   I don't think Jenny Craig has meetings.  The Weight Watcher meetings are extremely inspiring, helpful, and very enjoyable!  People share their stories from the previous week.  It is a very supportive atmosphere!  The Weight Watchers meetings are actually fun!
Slim fast is having meal replacement shakes and bars.  I don't really think that this is realistic. Maybe for a short amount of time it might work.  Yet I feel that when you are really, really hungry you crave protein not sweets and I don't see then how a shake would satisfy your hunger.  I know there is protein in milk but I think when you need protein you NEED protein, even if it is beans, not a sugary protein shake.  You need REAL food!

I also believe that it is important to eat smaller , more frequent meals.  You have to keep your metabolism on its toes.  Your metabolism has to know that food is constantly coming down so it doesn't slow down. It has to keep working and burning!!!!  Makes sense!!!!!  Every few hours we should eat something healthy.  And breakfast....so important!  Break the fast from the night.  "Metabolism it is time to wake up and start working and burning!"
Portion control.......very important!  When you eat out with a friend, sharing is a good thing.  Restaurants serve such huge portions.  Just because it is put in front of us does not mean that we have to eat it.  If you share with a friend then you will only eat half the portion and that is more than enough!  And if you need a sweet after you eat that is okay.  Everyone is entitled to a sweet.  Just use portion control.  Everything in moderation.  And don't walk away from the table stuffed!
Has anyone tried any of these eating plans?  What do you think about them?  Has any one in particular worked for you?  I would be interested in hearing about the slim fast plan.  If I had to make my own list. I would put Weight Watchers as number 1, Slim Fast as 2, and Jenny Craig would be last!  What do you think?  I would love to hear your comments!

Just  pop it in the freezer!
This great item is called The Cool-It Caddy.  It keeps your make-up cool for hours!  Great for the warm weather and a day at the beach.  Remember that warm temperatures can breed bacteria in your make-up and also can melt your make-up so this really is a great product for the upcoming months!  Great for medications as well!
