I'm a little late again with my wishing you a good weekend.  What are you up to this weekend?  So far it's been freezing here in New York.  We've been having such a mild winter and now that it is Spring it is so cold.  A little confusing.  Have a good one!

Jane Fonda...looking great at 73!

She says her new book, Prime Time, is her gift to the generation that has stuck with her, in all her incarnations, through half a century. She told Newsweek, "We're the first generation to be in this situation, to be aging but also to be active and really alive. There just aren't any road maps. It's terrifying."




Fonda says she's learned to be the happiest she's ever been - after dealing with eating disorders, polictical controversy, breast cancer, three divorces, motherhood, a plastic surgery, professional triumphs and very difficult parents. (Her mother committed suicide when she was 12 and her father, Henry Fonda was very remote.)

At 73 and going strong, she has advice for women over 60. "I've done a lot of what I want to do, and finally, after all this time, I know where I'm headed."

Did you ever wish that you lived somewhere else?

I was born in Los Angeles but grew up in New York.  I love New York (well not in the winter.)  I have always wanted to live in California. I've always had a love of California although since I was born I've only been there once.  I guess because of the weather.  And also the celebs, (I get starstruck)  although we have quite a few celebs in N.Y.C.  I'm a warm weather person so I also love Florida but would not want to live there in the summer.  Wherever you go you take your troubles with you.  With that being said....would you want to live somewhere else?


                            

Oriental Chicken Salad

Healthy and easy to make!

 

Ingredients:  (this is for one serving)

1 cup shredded iceberg lettuce

1 cup shredded green cabbage

1 cup shredded carrots

1/2 cup diced chicken breast

1/2 cup crispy chow mein noodles (La Choy makes a good one!)

2 ounces of any Thai peanut or honey lime dressing

Directions:

Toss everything together in a bowl and enjoy!

Back to the 60's and 70's

          Whenever I see something that reminds me of the 60's and 70's I take a pic.  I went to the salon the day before my birthday because I was not welcoming in "58" with grey roots.   They had a "really cool"  arrangement that brought me right back to high school which is so nice because my 40 year reunion is this year!                                    

And two hours later no grey.  Thank you to Cheveux Salon and Day Spa in Woodmere!

Christian Louboutin has released a new pair of f**k-me heels.  For $1400 you can wear them.  Many celebs like Katy Perry and Ashanti have already worn these "sexy" shoes.  The word "SEX" is spelled out in Swarovski crystals.

The Hunger Games - (bad example of what Hollywood is capable of)

Well today is my Birthday.  I am 58!  Now can someone please tell me how that happened.  I'm not going to freak out or anything.  I am going to embrace 58 and be thankful for all that I have and be thankful for just being here.  Here to be part of this beautiful world......if only everyone could get along.  We have one planet, one beautiful planet,......why is there so much hunger and hate and killing.  Life is about love!  It's so simple, yet so hard........which leads me to the movie I saw this weekend with my daughter........

                                                                  

She was so excited to go see it after having read all three of the books.  Yes,  "The Hunger Games."  Well I went with her but spent much time in the lobby of the theater..........Why is there a movie about innocent children killing innocent children.  This movie is supposed to take place after the destruction of the United States.  There is a new group of colonies.  They are ruled by a head colony.  I'm watching this movie as a mom and am watching young children being killed in what is called a game.  Young, innocent children are killed for the enjoyment of the audience.  These games take place every year.    I didn't read the books.  I don't care that I didn't read the books.  Children are being killed because the society that they live in has these games every year and the citizens watch it as a reality show but it is a reality show gone wrong!  And it is being commentated as the killings are going on.  A play by play description.  The commentators talk about the skills of the children, how they are doing in this ridiculous game.  People in the control room can actually place ferocious animals right in front of the children to attack them.  Obstacles are put in their way.  The children are physically hurt.  Life-threatening wounds.    The children have to use survival tactics to stay alive.  They are actually running from one another in fear that they will be killed and THEY WILL eventually...... only 1 or 2 can live.  So it is survival of the fittest.
I looked around the theater and saw so many teens.  I saw children that looked like they might be 12 or 13 years old.  What is this movie telling them?  To me this movie is promoting violence.  It is making it seem that it is perfectly natural for one young innocent teen to kill another.  "Hunger Games" makes light of killing.  It is condoning it.  It is glamorizing it.  It is making it a game.
And whoever wrote these books and made this movie is making a lot of money.  It did amazing at the box office this weekend.  Shame on them!  Something just doesn't seem right to me.  All this press for a movie that is promoting violence.  I can understand violence in a movie (although I don't ever like violence) when it is good against evil.  But these are innocent children forced to fight and kill to entertain the citizens of this country.  They are putting on the ultimate reality show.  How does an author write a book like this.  Does he or she think about the repercussions?  There are beyond impressionable kids out there.  What is this teaching our young children?
Are my missing something here?  I think that this movie is disgusting!  I know that I am 58 and not a teen but honestly I don't think that my age has anything to do with how I am viewing this movie.  And if it does then aren't the "grown-ups" in this world supposed to set examples for the younger generation?  And as a side note.  There were about 5 coming attractions before the movie.  Each and every one was violent in some way.  Are adventure movies, love stories, mysteries not good enough any more?
Hollywood.......I think that you should rethink what you are all about.  I think that you should rethink the messages that you are sending.

Chia

                        
Chia seeds contain more omega-3s than any other plant food (although as alpha-linolenic acid, which the body must convert to more usable forms).  Chia also boasts more calcium than milk;  abundant vitamin C, fiber, and iron;  and potentially blood pressure-lowering effects.  The seeds have little taste but add texture, and they stay fresh without refrigeration for up to two years. The white variety, marketed as Salba, offers even more protein and good fats.

Breakfast.  Unlike flaxseed, you don't have to grind chia for your body to digest it.  Mix into your morning juice to create a thickened "chia fresca,"  or stir into pancake or waffle batter for an appealing crunch.

Baking.  Because of sensitivites to guar or xanthan gum, some gluten-free bakers turn to chia as a binding element.  To replace gum, use the same amount of chia mixed with twice that quantity of boiling water.

Egg stand-in.  Its water-absorbent qualities make chia an excellent egg replacement, too.  Whisk 1 tablespoon chia with 3 tablespoons hot water and let sit for 10 minutes until it becomes thick and gooey;  use in place of one egg.

Better than bread crumbs.  Sprinkle chia seeds over casseroles or mix them into any kind of breading for fish, chicken, or tofu.

Inexpensive and fun home decor

Love these ideas.  I think this door as a headboard (pic below) looks so great.
You do have to put the crown molding on the top to create a ledge. Would you be willing to try this?  I think that the results are really cool. (showing my age with that adjective)

A solid old door, refinished and hung sideways, becomes a perfect -- and perfectly inexpensive -- headboard for a bed. Check yard sales and flea markets for doors, and modify the steps below if you find one with a different design. A strip of crown molding along the top edge offers a neat finish and a handy spot for a small alarm clock.
Headboard How-To
1. Trim the bottom or top of the door so the rails (the ladderlike crosspieces that separate the door's panels) are equal in width; on most old doors, the bottom rail is thicker than the others. A standard-height door will be tall enough for any size bed; trim as needed.
2. Sand, prime, and paint the door.
3. To mount the headboard, cut a 1-by-4 to the headboard's width, and then cut it lengthwise on a 45-degree angle into two equal strips. Securely screw one strip to the back of the door and attach the second to the wall, so the angles interlock to hang the headboard.
4. Keep the bottom of the headboard the same distance from the wall by screwing a 1-inch-thick strip to the back.
5. Finish the top of the headboard by nailing on a mitered crown molding.

That box of folded handkerchiefs at a vintage-clothing store might not look promising, but, unfolded, each one can be a piece of art. Many handkerchiefs from 1900 through the 1960s were printed with lively designs. Framed simply, they're great decorations for a wall. Here's how to do it: Wash and iron handkerchiefs; measure each of the four sides, adding 1/2 inch to each measurement. Have 1/8-inch-thick glass and 1/16-inch-thick poster board cut to these dimensions. Center the handkerchief on the poster board, and cover it with the glass, matching up the edges. Do not use tape or glue to mount the handkerchief; residue from either can stain or discolor the fabric. Use a Swiss clip to clamp the middle of one side while applying foil tape along the opposite edge, making sure the tape adheres to the glass and the poster board. Snip tape at the corners. Center a clip over the tape, then repeat the process for the remaining three sides.

Restore a scratched wooden table with a new surface of 1/2-inch cork.

Cork-Top Table How-To

1. Measure tabletop; cut piece of cork to size. Lightly sand table surface. Using a foam roller and a metal paint tray lined with disposable plastic, roll contact cement onto back of cork and tabletop. When glue becomes tacky, line up cork precisely at two front corners (contact cement is very unforgiving), and press down.


2. Tack on wood molding with mitered corners, using 1-inch brads. Seal cork with butcher's wax. Use masking tape to protect tabletop edges; apply 2 coats of semigloss paint.

Playboy Bunnies



I have to tell you a little secret.  When I was a teenager I wanted desperately to be a playboy bunny.  I actually went so far as to go to the Playboy Club in N.Y.C. (with one of my friends who also wanted to be a bunny) and ask for a job.  I then decided that my father would kill me so I left and never went back.  Well browsing the web I found these photos and it reminded me of one of my young crazy ideas.  Thought I would share these pics with you.
