Strength Training

It is extremely important, especially the older we get, to do some form of Strength training.  Whether you use machines (my least favorite), resistance tubing and bands, free weights, or your own body weight, strength training is a must to maintain muscle and bone strength!   Having strong muscles and bones gives you the ability to perform Activiities of Daily Living with ease.   Activities of Daily Living include climbing stairs, getting in and out of a car, picking up groceries or a grandchild and to have strong footing to stop a fall!
The benefits of strength training are endless!  It will lower your blood pressure, lower your blood sugar, decrease depression and basically make you a healthier person.  Ladies, how did you do on your Bone Density Test?  If your results were not as good as you expected, don't worry, we can reverse those bad results.  Of course listen to your doctor, BUT I will tell you that starting a strength training program is the best thing that you can do to reverse those bad results!!!!!
Remember, always check with your doctor before starting any exercise program.

ps  I mentioned to listen to your doctor but I have to say that at this point in time I am extremely undecided on taking calcium supplements and the Boniva type drugs.  I do agree that taking a  Vitamin D  supplement is extremely important if you are deficient as well as getting an adequate supply of calcium in your diet.

Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness.

"Physical fitness is the first requisite of happiness. Our interpretation of physical fitness is the attainment and maintenance of a uniformly developed body with a sound mind fully capable of naturally, easily, and satisfactorily performing our many and varied daily tasks with spontaneous zest and pleasure."  quote by Joseph Pilates
"We retire too early and we die too young, our prime of life should be in the 70’s and old age should not come until we are almost 100." quote by Joseph Pilates

pss  I am not a doctor.  I am a certified personal trainer.  Always check with your doctor before starting any exercise program and before taking any supplements!  Advice given is my opinion based on my experience and what I have researched.

Chin and Jaw Toner

I found this video on youtube and from the testimonials it seems like it might work.  I am definitely going to try this.

"Do this exercise 2 x per day for two weeks. DON'T OVER EXTEND OR CLENCH THE JAW: there should be no pain or pressure on the main jaw joint ."

Do you have a mantra?

Good morning beautiful people,
Having a daily mantra (or affirmation) is a great way to start the day.  It can set the tone for your day.  It can make a good day great.  And if you are having a tough day it can help you get through it.  Research has found that mantras really do work.  You just have to change that negative thought into a positive one.  The minute that negative thought starts to creep in....say your mantra.....and banish that bad thought!!
You can pick a new mantra every day.  There are so many. A mantra that helps one person de-stress might not be good for another.  You have to find the one that feels right for you.
Here are just a few.........

"Don't Worry, Be Happy"

p.s. when my daughter was a toddler she would walk around saying "Don't Worry, Be Happy" but she could only say..... "Don't worr, be hap" .....
p.s.s.  here are some more mantras on Pinterest

Jason Lee and his unbelievable photography!

Jason Lee is a wedding photographer.  He also photographs his two adorable daughters in the most creative ways.  In 2006 Jason Lee's mother was diagnosed with non-Hodgkins lymphoma.  Since his mom was not well and his daughters always had the common childhood colds or sore throats he could not always bring them to visit their grandmother.  So he started a blog to document the girls in photos for his mom to see.
I don't know how he does it but these photos are amazing!

My new discovery from Trader Joe's.

We always love to discover something new and healthy at Trader Joe's.  A few weeks ago we found  Trader Joe's Multigrain Blend with Vegetables.  We love it so much that I had to share our latest find  with you.  It is sooo delicious, easy, healthy and inexpensive!  A meal by itself in three minutes!  Or as a side dish.  Hot or cold.  It is a blend of whole grains - barley, corn, and spelt, red, black and white rice-and veggies which include peas, carrots, and zucchini.  Really hearty and filling for $2.99.

Dinner with my friend and great music!

Friday night my dear friend Maxine took me out for a belated birthday dinner.  (my bday was March 26) We went to Lawson Pub in Oceanside.  We have not seen each other for a while but when you are really good friends it's like you saw each other yesterday.  It was so great to sit and talk and catch up.  And we didn't know that there was going to be music.  The group is "ACE" and they were so good.

Video posted by Dove.

This very powerful video was posted on Youtube by Dove.  Dove did a study on how women view themselves as opposed to how others see them.  As part of the study each woman would pair up with another participant and get to know them.  A retired forensic artist from the San Jose police department, who never met the woman, asked them questions about their looks as he sketched them.  He was behind a curtain and unable to see them.  He then asked the person that the subject got to know to describe the woman's  looks.  It's amazing to see how we perceive our looks as opposed to how others see us.

"Women are their own worst beauty critics," Dove says. "Only 4% of women around the world consider themselves beautiful ... we decided to conduct a compelling social experiment that explores how women view their own beauty in contrast to what others see."

Living in a Boeing 727 - One awesome grandmother!!

Talk about creativity.  Joanne Ussary paid $2,000 for a used Boeing 727.  It cost $4,000 to move the plane and $24,000 to renovate.  Joanne Ussary, is a grandmother from Mississippi.  She lost her house in an ice storm in 1994 and decided to change things up a bit when she purchased her new home.  With the prices of houses this is clearly an amazing investment!  Look how pretty!  What an amazing view she has!  I wonder what the taxes are!  Would you consider living in a home like this?
